President Obama Loses 40,000 Twitter Followers After Tweeting About Debt Ceiling

President Obama tried to take the fight of the nation’s debt ceiling into cyberspace — and lost. More than 40,000 of Obama’s Twitter followers “un-followed” him after the ceaseless barrage of tweets.

Many of Obama’s followers became extremely irked when his administration’s campaign staff used @BarackObama Twitter account to post the Twitter handles of Republican leaders and send them the following message to them in every state: “Tweet at your Republican legislators and urge them to support a bipartisan compromise to the debt ceiling,” he said, according to media reports.

Many articulated their irritation in full:

“Honestly, @BarackObama, I’m going to have to unfollow you if you don’t stop filling up my Twitter inbox soon,” tweeted one progressive follower of Obama from Boston.

“Can’t believe I had to unfollow @BarackObama for spamming Twitter,” tweeted a person from Connecticut. “Really, really strange behavior.”

One Georgia Twitter follower, however, wouldn’t think of unfollowing Obama at this juncture, despite the ceaceless messaging. “I want to unfollow @BarackOBama but his desperation is too entertaining.”

Not to worry, however, Obama fans. The president did not actually lose the argument about the nation’s debt. In fact, Obama’s Twitter plan worked. The Twitter account of his Republican rivals were flooded by millions of other Obama followers who tweeted  their endless pleas to raise the debt ceiling.

Additionally, Obama still has a lot of friends. Obama continues to be the third-most followed person in the world at 9,362,880. That’s down from the previous day’s count of 9,402,808
