For those who still think of the West Coast as Snoop Dogg, red and blue
rags, and 64s, Planet Asia represents the often-underappreciated
alternative to West Coast gangsterism. Many are not familiar with the
Golden State’s rich alt-hip-hop history, (Dilated Peoples, The
Hieroglyphics Crew, the Black Eyed Peas, etc.), but this Fresno MC
shows the masses that — contrary to old stereotypes — Cali MCs are
lyricists,
too. With songs like “Street Hop” and “Game Goofy,”
and a flow reminiscent of the Roots’ Black Thought,
this album is definitely a breath of fresh air in the suffocating
