Founders, The Artist & Elaine Thornton Foundation for the Arts
It’s important for all youth to have a creative outlet, but nowhere is
the need more obvious than the inner city. Young blacks and Latinos
creativity is a voice for their culture, and The Artist & Elaine
Thornton Foundation for the Arts was founded almost 20 years ago to
nurture that creativity. “We were trying to get a group together that
would work with youngsters in the community and be a liaison with
groups who were funding things like theater, photography, etc.,”
explains founder Artist Thornton. “We were gearing it primarily towards
children, trying to get them exposed to all aspects of the arts.”
Artist and his wife, Elaine, firmly believe in the importance of art
and culture in building stronger individuals, citizens, and,
ultimately, communities. Their Lecture Series also offers young people
a perspective on the arts, one that may inspire them far into the
future. “It’s one of the purest ways we have of our expressing
ourselves,” explains Artist. “It’s something that’s been in my blood
and I feel it’s necessary for the black, brown and underserved
communities. We need to have some historical point of reference.”
The foundation has been a huge part of many young Dallas residents’
upbringing, and the Thorntons, who have been active in the community
since their arrival from Los Angeles, aren’t looking to slow down — in
fact, they are still welcoming anyone willing to benefit or help out.
“It’s been wonderful,” says Elaine. “Seeing children growing up with a
skill, talent and artistic discipline — that’s really what keeps me
going.” And the children of Dallas are forever grateful for that. – todd williams
