Since kicking off its grand opening in 2005 with a concert by the legendary Rolling Stones, the 20,000-seat Charlotte Bobcats Arena has played host to everything from sold-out world tours to dizzying circus stage shows.
Behind every impeccably executed production works a consummate team. At the helm of the Charlotte Bobcats Arena’s operations, stands Donna Julian who makes sure there’s no ‘t’ left uncrossed.
“I take care of putting on each [and] every event that we have in the building,” explains Julian of her demanding job. “Depending on whether it’s a Bobcat game, concert or family show, I’m ensuring that whatever the promoter or the person putting on the event needs, [it’s] met from the staffing, to the security, to the box office.”
Julian is senior vice president of event and arena operations for the Bobcats Arena and has been playing in the male-dominated field since 1985.
“I’m a huge sports fan, so it’s a natural fit for me,” says Julian. “Obviously, there are a lot of men in the business. It’s a very exciting industry; but, there are lots of women getting involved.”
For the past two years, Julian has been involved in the arena’s most ambitious event, the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s Conference, which saw over 165,000 attendees for its weeklong even in 2007.
“We kind of go through what they’re going to be doing the whole week that they’re with us. From the moment they get in the building to the moment they walk out, we have our staff ready to greet their guests and make sure we’re ready to roll.” – adam jones
