Firstlook Home EntertainmentWhile Michael Douglas proved he could accurately portray a businessman gone bonkers in Wallstreet, he takes his wild-eyed antics to the next level in King of California. In this remake of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, Douglas plays a whacked out mental patient who’s recently been released from a care facility. While his paperwork says he’s cleared to rejoin the general population, Charlie quickly proves that he is still a little cuckoo. Tensions rise when Charlie moves in with his estranged, 16-year-old daughter Miranda (Evan Rachel Wood), and the discontent teen is forced to care for him. What first appears to be a strained relationship (at crazy Charlie’s expense) builds into a compelling affirmation of the ties between father and daughter. King of California is a sparkling gem of a feel-good movie that more people should’ve experienced on the big screen. -michelle williams
