Is the black community homophobic?:
Questlove discusses Prop 8
![]() |
According to a report in the Los Angeles Times, 70 percent of African-Americans voted in favor of Proposition 8. An Associated Press exit poll found that seven out of 10 black voters supported the ballot to overturn the California Supreme Court’s decision in May that allowed same-sex marriages. Since it was found that minorities, African-Americans in particular, voted heavily in favor of Prop 8, the community’s level of homophobia has been put into question.
Recently Rolling Out caught up with The Roots drummer and Okayplayer.com-founder and resident blogger Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson. In our sit-down, the always-introspective musician and activist had a lot to say about what seemed to be overwhelming support from the African-American’s community anti-human rights legislation. Always thoughtful with his answers, ?uestlove uses a personal experience to put the bigger issues behind Prop 8 in perspective.
