Will Hillary Clinton become secretary of state under Barack Obama presidency?
President-elect Barack Obama has been in talks with his former bitter rival, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, about the former first lady becoming the secretary of state under his administration. British newspapers first reported that Obama’s transition team has begun the vetting process with the New York junior senator and former presidential candidate. CNN states that two members of Obama’s team has asked for the records of former President Bill Clinton’s nonprofit organization and other critical papers to see if there will be any information that would block Hillary Clinton’s nomination.
Pundits speculate that former first lady Clinton would accept the nomination if Obama indeed makes the offer. If so, Clinton would be just the third woman to be secretary of state, including the second in a row. Madeline Albright was secretary of state under the Bill Clinton Administration in the 1990s, and Condoleezza Rice is concluding her term under President George W. Bush.
Since the highly-contentious, record-setting presidential primary between Obama and Clinton, political experts speculated that if Obama does not make Clinton a vice presidential nominee, he could possibly offer the influential senator what is considered the most important cabinet post. Obama, of course, picked Delaware Senator Joseph Biden as his running mate en route to the easy presidential victory. – terry shropshire
