When Cedric Upshaw graduated from Southern University Law School in 1992 and began practicing law in Baton Rouge, La., he never imagined that in less than a decade he would leave his profession to become the go-to guy for his alma mater’s biggest fundraiser and alumni reunion.
Along with a host of other duties, Upshaw is Southern’s coordinator for the Bayou Classic, which features rivals Southern University Jaguars vs. Grambling State University Tigers. Upshaw works closely with staff, sponsors and student affairs to make sure the weekend maintains its reputation as a world-class production.
“This is our 35th year in New Orleans,” Upshaw explains of the classic showcase that has grown so large that neither Southern nor Grambling’s campuses can accommodate the affair as they once did. The event is held at New Orleans’ infamous Superdome.
“The classic is a time for us to showcase to the world how great these institutions are . we come from humble beginnings,” he offers. An active member of Phi Bet Sigma Fraternity Inc., Upshaw puts his best foot forward in his leadership role because the football game and the ancillary events, Fan Fest and the Battle of the Bands, raise millions of dollars for scholarships.
“We know that there is a lot of fun, entertainment and excitement, so we have to make sure that the business is being taken care of first,” says Upshaw. –yvette caslin
