When BET first announced it would be releasing its first scripted comedic series, “Somebodies,” many wondered how viable the series would actually be. With a relatively unknown cast, anchored by the writing, directing, and lead acting of Hadjii, many questions lingered prior to the show’s release. But then something happened. When the show made its debut, people actually liked it … a lot. But not in the nonsensical way that many gravitate to most pop-culture phenomena. With this show, the audience was attracted to the wit and realness captured through both the writing and the characters. One character in particular who captured the heart of the audience, thereby developing a large fan following, was lead actor Kaira Akita.
In a Hollywood climate that offers a dearth of substantive roles for black women, the talented actress understands the magnitude of this opportunity. “This experience has been such a blessing for me,” Akita explains.” ‘ Somebodies’ is really special to me. It was shot in Athens, Ga., which is wonderful because most shows are either shot in New York or L.A. So it was nice to be a working actor in Georgia. On top of that, the writing was so smart, funny and edgy. The writer, Hadjii, did a really brilliant job of developing my character, and giving a female character a role with some meat.”
As Akita reflects on the generosity of Hadjii’s creative pen, she also casts a longing eye on her now luminous future, which includes more acting projects, as well as a successful Atlanta based- fashion boutique cleverly called, A Clothes Encounter. “There is so much left for me to accomplish,” Akita expresses. “By staying humble and maintaining my focus on my goals, I believe that my options are unlimited. I just have to keep the faith.” –dewayne rogers
