Ciara Ginyard: A Life-Changing Experience

Alanta Regional Recruiter, Peace Corps

This month, millions of college seniors across the nation will graduate. While many graduates will enter the workforce, others will seek to strengthen their résumé by gaining more experience through volunteerism. As a regional recruiter for Peace Corps, Ciara Ginyard speaks to college students about the benefits of joining the Peace Corps. –a.r.

When did you become a member of Peace Corps?
I became a member of Peace Corps during my senior year at Syracuse University. At the time, I was debating on what I should do after college. I wanted to travel to other countries and my passion was to serve. I eventually served in Honduras and the experience changed my life.

Why should college graduates consider joining Peace Corps?
A lot of college students think about what they should do after graduation. They’re finding that employers want people with experience. With Peace Corps, you gain experience through international development. It makes your résume more marketable and you gain experience in another language. By sharing your experiences with other nations and learning from them at the same time, you become well-rounded.

How has the response been thus far?
My job is to recruit at HBCUs in the southeast. The response has been good. We’re trying to get kids involved in the program early. We make sure the students know about the Peace Corp as freshmen. We encourage them to take foreign language classes and to volunteer.
