So
In Style™ is the new line of black dolls by Barbie® with authentic
black features like full lips, a wider nose, curly hair, distinctive
cheekbones and a range of complexions. Stacey McBride-Irby, a Barbie
designer of 12 years, has garnered global attention and condemnation
since the dolls hit shelves last week. The African American mother of
two wanted to “create a line of dolls more reflective of her
daughter and community.”
Critics
say that one of the dolls looks “hip-hop” because she’s wearing
a gold chain and sneakers and another has “straight to curly hair,
which was a bit racist,” according to the U.K.-based The
Daily Telegraph.
According to
Mattel, McBride-Irby’s inspiration was her then four-year-old
daughter who she witnessed playing. Not relying solely on her own
intuition, she personally designed and directed the dolls’ fashions
and storylines based on what she heard from moms in her community.
The So In Style™ line features three best friends, Grace, Kara and
Trichelle (left) and their little sisters, Courtney, Kiana and
Janessa, respectively.
“I
believe that a happy inspired childhood creates happy, inspired,
powerful women,” said McBride-Irby in a press release issued by
Mattel. “I want my new So In Style dolls to not only be an
authentic representation of my community and culture, but to also
encourage girls to be inspired and dream big.”
