Autumn Williams: Smile for the Camera

Autumn Williams

If a picture is worth a thousand words than photographer Autumn Williams is a wordsmith with a boundless vocabulary. The accomplished graduate of the Art Institute of Atlanta, talked with rolling out while preparing to display her work at the famed institution on Friday, Dec.18, at the Art Institute’s Portfolio Show from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. –roz edward

Since you were already a working photographer, what was the benefit of formal training?

It gave me hands-on experience from professionals who have worked in the field. I got a more in-depth perspective about photography from a scholastic perspective.

How do you decide on the subject for your photos?

I don’t. It usually finds me. I may have a picture of the shot in my head that I want and I use the tools in front of me to get it. Whether I’m directing  a model or manipulating the environment, I work at it to get what I want out of the shot.

What is your photographic style?

It’s edgy. It’s urban. I photograph people, nature, landscapes and architecture. I am not limiting myself to any one particular thing but photographing people is my preference.

What does it take to be a marketable photographer?

You have to be good at what you do, but you also have to build relationships and rapport with people and prospective clients. A lot of times they will request you if you have already established those relationships.

What can patrons expect to see at the Portfolio Show?

They can expect to see a little piece of my personality at work.
