The ‘Booty Call’ Catches Scientists’ Attention: Study Published in Journal of Sex Research

alt

Black culture is in the spotlight, once again.  A team of scientist comprised of researchers from University of West Florida, Singapore Management University, and New Mexico State University have just published a paper in the July 28, 2010 Journal of Sex Research on the concept of the “Booty Call.”  The paper titled “Positioning the Booty-Call Relationship on the Spectrum of Relationships: Sexual but More Emotional Than One-Night Stands,” examines and describes” the sexual and emotional nature of booty-call relationships.”  The authors are Peter K. Jonason, Norman P. Li, and Jessica Richardson.

The methods employed were strictly qualitative in nature. Different emotional and sexual acts involved in booty-call relationships were operationalized with respect to the frequency of those acts in booty-call relationships to one-night stands and serious long-term relationships. Traditional research on human sexuality and inter- personal relationships has targeted long-term pairbonds and one-night stands. The concern is that the booty call neither fits in this category nor the one nightstand.

Data was collected via an online survey.  In total, 136 college students in two waves were interviewed, 60 percent of respondents were female. The mean age of participants was 19.5 years of age.

According to the authors, a booty call is a “compromise” relationship and differs in concept based on gender. For women, it involves the possibility of a permanent future commitment and for men it is more of a “low-cost” sexual activity. Considered to be a step up from the concept of “friends with benefits,” the booty call provides the male with incessant access to sex. However, it also entails that he invest some time in building a relationship with the female.

Findings also indicate that the availability of cell phones, in concert with the practice of instant messaging and texting has impacted the increased frequency of the booty call for 20-somethings. Moreover, findings indicate that women received more calls supporting evidence from prior studies that assert men pursue sex more frequently than women. Another determinant of booty call participation was that most were based primarily on physical attractiveness and timing. –torrance stephens, ph.d.
