Diet and Health: 4 Supplements That Help Black Males Maintain Good Health

alt

Americans are becoming more health conscious. From what they eat to working out, more people are climbing aboard the good health bandwagon. In addition to working out and watching what we eat, there are some additional things we all can do to maintain our physical well-being. For men, this is also true, especially since in this fast-paced world, many males do not always eat properly. One way to accomplish the goal of maintaining one’s health is through the use of supplements.

A dietary supplement is a product that is intended to supplement the diet and contains one or more dietary ingredients. These may include but are not limited to vitamins, minerals, herbs or amino acids. They are normally taken orally as a capsule, tablet or liquid. These supplements add to your diet, but are not a substitute for food. There are many supplements that should be considered, however here is a list of four that all men should consider.

Zinc: Zinc is essential and a very important mineral that is involved in a wide range of metabolic activities including the healing of injuries, insulin production, immunity, smell, taste and fertility. It is required for the chemical activity of approximately 100 enzymes.

Fish oil: Fish oil is oil derived from the tissues of oily fish. This oil naturally contains the Omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Because the oil is so high in Omega-3, it is highly recommended for people who may have a history of hypertriglyceridemia, otherwise known as elevated triglycerides. It is also considered important in the prevention of rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular disease prevention and high blood pressure.

Selenium: Selenium is a mineral found in water and some foods. It is considered important in the prevention of diseases of the heart and blood vessels, including stroke and hardening of the arteries. It is also is documented to provide protective properties for the prostate gland.

Ascorbic acid (vitamin C): Vitamin C occurs naturally in foods such as citrus fruit, tomatoes, potatoes and leafy vegetables. Ascorbic acid is important for bones and connective tissues, muscles, blood vessels and helps the body absorb iron. Some scientists suggest that it has benefits in dealing with gum disease, acne and other skin infections as well.
