5 Reasons the African American Community Loves How Sweet the Sound:

1. For the past four years Verizon Wireless has brought us the best in gospel music. Not only has it elevated the status of religious music, but they brought the most prominent performers in gospel music music to the forefront of a phenomenal cellular sponsored event.

2. If you haven’t had the pleasure of engaging in gospel karaoke or stepped out there and put your own talents on displaying front of a friendly and supportive crowd, you’ve missed something. Verizon Wireless’s How Sweet the Sound tour afforded everyone who was willing an opportunity to to share their vocal gifts and get heard by the “right people.” It also gave church officials and choir leaders a glimpse at  the range of  possibilities for highlighting the art form and expanding their choral activities.

3. Verizon Wireless sponsored the Songwriters and Producers series to assist bourgeoning gospel singers and artists with their careers and put them on solid ground. The series showcased successful gospel artists in cities around the country who worked with potential songwriters, singers and producers to hone their skills and ready their talents for a broader listening audience. The late Bishop Hawkins lent his considerable expertise to the program prior to his passing and participants remain thankful for having the opportunity to take instruction from the master.

4. Verizon Wireless has continued to demonstrate its dedication and commitment to the African American and gospel communities by featuring and essentially uplifting choirs and choir directors who work passionately to make a joyful noise and spread praise through their musical ministries. The How Sweet the Sound tour and competition has enabled choirs of all sizes to realize their dreams of earning money for their church homes with cash prizes up to $50,000.

5. The ongoing opportunities generated by the How Sweet the Sound program is a boon to the gospel music industry. Choirs and talents which may have gone unnoticed outside of their respective communities are propelled onto the national stage and in some cases into the studios. Gospel personalities are afforded an opportunity to engage with the larger community on a more personal basis through traveling from city to city to listen and vote for their favorite choirs. All participating parties, including the African American press, have benefitted greatly from the coming together of all of the components involved in bringing How Sweet the Sound to the stage and communities across the country.
