Soulja Boy has made several questionable decisions since his latest album, The DeAndre Way, flopped by only selling 13,000 copies in the first week of its release.
He allowed himself to be portrayed as an emasculated rapper in XXL‘s cover photo alongside 50 Cent and he lied about writing Willow Smith’s hit “Whip My Hair.”
In another attention-grabbing move, Soulja Boy has said that he should have won the 2008 Grammy for Best Rap Song that was awarded to Kayne West. Although Soulaj Boy’s “Crank Dat” created a dance craze and ignited the young rapper’s career, Kayne West’s “Good Life” was a better song overall.
It appears that Soulja Boy is going through a mid-career crisis. By selling only 13,000 copies of The DeAndre Way in the first week, Soulja Boy has put himself in a position to be written off as a rapper at the tender age of 20.
If his fan base is drying up, his future as an artist is in jeopardy. His latest career sound bites and choices are that of a desperate rapper attempting to hold on to his fledging career. –a.r.
