Will Smith and Jay-Z have teamed up for a new venture, creating a joint film company to produce and develop films. The first project on tap is the previously reported Annie remake, starring Will’s daughter, Willow.
In a statement, Jay-Z had this to say about the as yet unnamed company:
“The Overbrook Entertainment family and I have a unified vision. We’ve already produced a Tony Award winning play and we’re developing a true superstar in Willow. This venture into film development and production is a perfect next step with teams that are accomplished, creative, and innovative.”
Overbrook Entertainment, Smith’s existing film company, has produced hit films such as Hitch, Hancock and most recently a remake of The Karate Kid.
Doug Belgrad, the president of Columbia Films, the home base for Overbrook, also commented on the new venture and the new duo’s first production together:
“The time is right to bring Annie back to the big screen,” said Belgrad. “Combining Willow with the Overbrook team that reimagined Karate Kid and the spectacular Jay-Z makes this a dream project.”
Now this is hip-hop on a higher level and the “real deal” best of both worlds. Will and Jay-Z began their careers as hip-hop artists but have parlayed that into jaw-dropping success in other industries. They are shining examples of how to handle your business. –nicholas robinson
