It’s normal for college students to explore sexual relationships. However, students at Brigham Young University are forced to live by an honor code that prohibits inappropriate sexual activity.
BYU basketball player Brandon Davies has been suspended by the school for having sex with his girlfriend. Davies was a star player at BYU, which is currently the No. 3 team in the nation. The 6-foot-9 star averaged 11.1 points per game and 6.2 rebounds.
Before entering BYU, each student must sign a contract that enforces strict discipline. According to BYU’s Honor Code, which comes from the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Word of Wisdom, students must “live a chaste [celibate] and virtuous life.” All “sexual misconduct, obscene or indecent conduct or expressions … and involvement with pornographic, erotic, indecent, or offensive material,” including any homosexual behavior, are clearly prohibited.
The code also states that students must “abstain from alcoholic beverages, tobacco, tea, coffee, and substance abuse.”
Do you think that BYU’s strict code of conduct is a bit excessive, considering that half of its students are adults? Or should other colleges adopt strict codes of conduct to develop a sense of character within their students? –a.r.
