Golf phenomenon Tiger Woods has suffered both personal and professional losses this past year following his high-profile infidelity scandal, “including the loss of his wife, Elin Nordegren, who divorced him in August 2010. But now that the dust has settled, Woods is opening up about life post-scandal and how his kids and family have been his saving grace.
In an interview with Robin Roberts for “Good Morning America,” Woods spoke about the highs and lows of being a single father.
“I think I’m more present [in my kids’ lives,] I’m present with my kids, and that’s what’s important,” said Woods. “It’s work, there’s no doubt … it’s work — it’s tough but enjoyable.”
After such a turbulent year in the public eye, Woods explains that finding the strength to get back on his feet was made easier by the love and support of his family.
“Just came back to what’s most important, went to family. And that’s as simple as that, family is first. And that’s what it was when I was growing up,” explained Woods. “My family, my mom and dad were always there, and they were always present for me. And that’s how I am with my kids now.”
Although Woods has gotten back into the swing of things in his personal life, he admits that his professional swing isn’t what it used to be. The golf legend failed to win any tournaments this year and has lost his top ranking.
“It’s been frustrating, no doubt, because, obviously, I enjoy winning golf tournaments, and I haven’t done that in a while,” said Woods. “I know what I’m capable of doing. And I know the shots that I’m hitting at home on the range. I know it’s in me. I just need to bring it out in a golf tournament.”
“I’m going to look at the fact that I need to keep progressing,” added Woods. “I need to keep escalating my skills. And that’s what I’m doing.”
