The storied rivalry between New York and Boston experienced yet another twist and turn with the Big Apple coming out on top once again. Only this time, the battle wasn’t waged on the baseball field. It was waged in court between New York native Jay–Z and Boston Red Sox slugger David “Big Papi” Ortiz.
“The case has been settled in principle,” explained one of Jay-Z’s lawyers, Peter Raymond. “We have agreed on the outlines of a settlement and need to reduce it to writing.”
The two had been wrangling in court since 2010 when Jay-Z slapped a $5 million dollar lawsuit on Ortiz for trademark infringement. The multiplatinum rapper, who owns several 40/40 Club locations, didn’t take too kindly to Ortiz opening up the “Forty-Forty” club in his native country, Dominican Republic.
Once the lawyers got involved, it was only a matter of time before things came to a peaceful resolution. There’s no word yet on how much Ortiz will eventually pay, but one can be certain that the name of his club will be changing soon. –djr
