Lil Wayne on Sobriety, Drake, Nicki Minaj, New Album

Building up steam for the release of his new album, Tha Carter IV, Young Money’s Chief, Lil Wayne, sat down with NY’s Hot 97 DJ Angie Martinez and discussed his life of sobriety, Drake and Nicki Minaj’s albums and his own upcoming album.

While discussing his once highly publicized drug use, Wayne, who’s now clean, explains that sobriety has surprisingly made it more challenging for him to create good music.

“Creatively, yes it’s harder. It’s better,” said Wayne. “I believe it’s harder because when I was on that level I would go with anything. But my anything’s were good, so thank God. But now there’s just a lot more thought into it.”

In the interview, Wayne also explains that although he’s proud of his new Young Money superstars, Drake and Nicki Minaj, he’s never actually heard their albums in their entirety.

“Honestly, I never even heard Drake’s album. I never heard Nicki’s album. … I work too hard,” said Wayne, who clarified that he did clear every track on each album. “Drake and Nick don’t take that no kind of way, man.”

Although Wayne has been hard at work perfecting his own album, Tha Carter IV, he says that he doesn’t expect this new album to generate the same massive first week sales that Tha Carter III did back in 2008.

“Not really cuz I promise to God I think that Tha Carter III thing, whatever it sold in the first week, was a once in a lifetime thing. I don’t ever expect to do that again,” said Wayne. “My people around me are like, we’re gonna do 2 mil, 3 mil this time and I’m like, in what world, n—-?”

Regardless of the whether it outsells Tha Carter III, Wayne believes that his new project is by far the strongest record he’s ever created.

“Oh it’s way better…cause’ I’m way better. Then coming from where I just came from, that made me a lot better.”
