Crystal Mangum of Durham, N.C.
Fellas, you may want to remember her name.
Mangum first bounced on the scene in 2006, when as a college student and exotic dancer, she accused three white Duke University Lacrosse players of locking her in a bathroom and sexually assaulting her during a frat house performance.
Now police officials allege that Mangum, 32, went after her 46-year-old boyfriend with a knife, “with intent to kill,” because she stabbed him in the torso during an argument.
Last year, Mangum assaulted her former boyfriend, Milton Walker, and during an argument threatened to stab him, too, according to reports. Walker escaped unscathed, but Mangum threw his clothes into a tub and burned them — in the presence of her children. In fact, she nearly burned down the house in the process, and was charged with endangering their lives, (child abuse), and served 88 days in jail.
Mangum is being held without bond.
Meanwhile, Walker remains in serious condition at Duke University Hospital.
Ironically, Mangum’s odd journey to infamy began at Duke University Hospital in 2006, when the hospital staff examined her for rape injuries allegedly sustained during the Duke Lacrosse players’ frat house party. The three wealthy white Lacrosse players who were charged with attacking the North Carolina Central University student-stripper struggling to make ends meet, sparked a national race fury.
But the facts of the case just didn’t add up.
As the defense attorneys produced evidence that the attack could not have happened the way Mangum described, Mangum changed the times the attack occurred, and then finally told authorities that she was unsure if she had actually been raped.
To make matters worse, prosecutor Mike Nifong was accused of lying to the judge about aspects of the rape case, and eventually, all charges against the Lacrosse players were dropped.
When the dust settled, Magnum did not go to jail for the scandal, but her ally, prosecutor Nifong, was sentenced to 24-hours in the slammer for his handling of the case.
