If you’ve been anxiously waiting for your trip to the Big Apple so you can pick up a knock-off designer bag, then you might want to rechannel that energy. The New York Post is reporting the city legislature is prepared to crack down on those who peddle fake goods.
All it takes is a stroll down the sidewalks of lower Manhattan (we see you Chinatown), and you’re bound to find more than a handful of vendors ready to sell off fake Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Rolex products. If this new legislation sees the light of day, however, that could all come to a screeching halt. Under Councilwoman Margaret Chin’s proposed law, buying counterfeit goods would be punishable by up to 12 months behind bars and a $1,000 fine.
Ouch.
Though the bill seems unenforceable, shoppers should still be wary. We’d hate for your weekend trip to New York to turn into a year stay behind bars … especially not for a Folex watch. –djr
