Over the years, flicks like Kill Bill, Domino, Salt and Hanna have propelled the character of the female assassin to new heights in Hollywood and now Tinseltown seems ready for a black actress to take the lead in the female assassin genre. Hollywood “it-girl” Zoe Saldana is starring in the soon to be released revenge-themed action drama Columbiana.
According to complex.com, Columbiana, which is set in Latin America, centers on a young woman who, after witnessing the murder of her mother and father as a child, works as an assassin for her uncle and goes on a killing spree to avenge the deaths of her parents.
Columbiana was written by Robert Mark Karmen and Luc Besson, the man responsible for previous assassin films The Professional and The Transporter and most recently, Taken. The high-octane drama was also produced by Besson and directed by Olivier Megaton.
The trailer for the film was released May 5 and the film is set to be released to theaters on Sept. 8. Watch the trailer for the film below:
