Oprah on Jennifer Hudson: ‘We’ve Never Been Stood Up Before’

As most people know, sitting on the couch of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” is a dream moment for most celebrities and when the media mogul calls, these celebrities know well enough to come running. And when Jennifer Hudson showed up late to a taping of the show earlier this year, word got out that host Oprah Winfrey was none too pleased with the singer. Now, months after the incident, Winfrey is now opening up and sharing her side of the story about Hudson’s tardiness.

The drama began in February when Hudson appeared on an episode of the show. After having attended a sound check for the taping, Hudson flew to Texas for a gig. However, due to a severe snowfall, Hudson was delayed in returning to Chicago the next morning, forcing Winfrey, her staff and the audience to wait for the singer.

As Winfrey explained in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, everyone on set, including the mogul herself, was upset with Hudson, which made for a tense scene while shooting footage for the OWN reality show “Oprah Behind the Scenes.”

“That was a lot of high drama because we’ve never been stood up before,” said the OWN network creator. “There were a lot of people saying a lot of things. Everybody was mad. I wanted to make sure that there was not one single thing in that episode that had anything to do with us being mad or upset in that moment. It was dramatic. Nobody has ever not shown up, ever. Especially if they were here the night before.”

With being delayed by a snow storm, there should not have been any “tension” from Oprah or her TEAM. When arrogance of status trumps common sense, I suppose one will be “angry”. I commend Jennifer for trying to get back to meet her commitment.

I agree that Jennifer had a legitimate excuse. Oprah
should have insisted that the snow storm, “ceased activity!”

  2. Candicane75216 on May 9, 2011 at 1:48 pm

I live in texas and yes, the storm was bad this past January and February so what happened to Jennifer was not her fault, she was in the same predicament that lot of people were in so oprah should just chill with being upset and thank god that Jennifer was okay.

  3. Maxx on May 9, 2011 at 1:52 pm

It wasn’t Jennifer’s fault that there was a snow storm. She had a commitment in Texas that she had to keep and she kept her commitment in Chicago. If there was any drama, it was on Carpenter Street.

  4. Roderic on May 9, 2011 at 2:07 pm

get over it oprah, like she had no power over the storm that made her late. it’s not like she just didn’t show at all. Please

Sounds to me by the way this article is written that Hudson did not stand Oprah up. It sounds like she was late which are two totally different things. No, tardiness is not acceptable, but I would like to think that is more acceptable than a now show. If it happened earlier this year, why is it still an issue. Don’t invite her anymore & move on. Quit dwelling on past guest of the Oprah Show. Stuff happens, & there will be more guest to come. Moving on…

I agree with what everyone else says here. No one expects a snowstorm in Texas so J-Hud probably figured everything would go smoothly because she’s probably made back and forth commitments like this before.

I’d say that most of the things in Oprah’s business life have gone fairly well so I think ‘Mz. Dahling’ will get over this one too. lol

This shows that you can’t plan too many things in too short a time period. You must allow time for delayed and even cancelled flights and be near or at your more important events well ahead of time! Time management isn’t easy for most of us, but excuses aren’t attractive.

J Hud should have been up front with her schedule. They flew her in early to beat the snow storm that hit Chicago with over 24′ of snow. I understand she had other gigs to do but to have 300 of your loyal fans waiting for over 4 hours. I understand you can’t predict the weather in Texas but the news kept reporting bad storms from Michigan to Texas why risk it!

    • Tajmiah on May 9, 2011 at 5:14 pm

And her fans that paid for a show in Texas, how would they have felt if she didn’t show up at all.

      • Perdita Brown on May 9, 2011 at 5:25 pm

@Tajmiah I read that she was doing private affair in Texas..Being late is not acceptable and overbooking is not acceptable. Bottom Line!

Here is another part of the story that I heard. Jennifer was not upfront with Oprah regarding her scedule. I worked in the entertainment industry and shows cost money. When a show does not start on time the crew would probably have to be paid overtime. Also another show was being taped after the show that Jennifer was on which caused delays on two shows. Jennifer’s management should not have over booked her. It is about being professional. Other shows may find this out and not book Jennifer for a show.

Ms. Oprah will get over it. She used to having it her way. As I know we learn each and every day and Ms. Hudson has nothing to do with the weather. Oprah not use to people standing her up. I wonder how she felt when she was in London when they did not let her go in the store because she was black. She got issues she really needs to see it through.

  12. Tajmiah on May 9, 2011 at 5:09 pm

She had to work. You can’t control the weather

  13. Maloneelecia on May 9, 2011 at 5:25 pm

It wasn’t her fault, she doesn’t control the weather, get over it.

  14. Trishac on May 9, 2011 at 6:06 pm

Its a learning experience across the board here. Oprah needs to know that the world is still moving and evolving around her ass with or without her. Jennifer needs to be careful with how things are booked around other major events, so that she don’t end up in situations like this, but ultimately people THINGS HAPPEN, and just because Oprah has never been stood up – PLEASE SOMEONE TELL HER TO KEEP LIVING… STEDMAN WILL MAYBE ONE DAY LOL… Jennifer has fans all over the world, and she didn’t will this snow storm to happen, but things should have been better managed. Hind sight is always 20/20, so you live and you learn hopefully. She is young and she will learn how to teach her management to handle things, and she will learn how to step out a override them with and executive decision. Oprah love you, but deuces to ya, if you even wanted to come back and speak out about something that wasn’t intentional. You’re appearing to have too much time on your hands… OWN THAT!

    • Cmiller_holmes on May 9, 2011 at 10:06 pm

      Just mean and petty!

  15. Lisa on May 9, 2011 at 7:06 pm

Oprah had to move a show to that day. So she had three show on the same day. That’s a disaster waiting to happen. Was Oparh going to pay Jennifer for her gig that was scheduled before this show was even thought about.

  16. Gettheconnection on May 10, 2011 at 12:07 am

I love Oprah, but neither her nor Hudson can control the weather, only GOD can do that.

  17. Steponit357 on May 10, 2011 at 6:08 am

I love Oprah and Know J’ personally…….. Ya ur Oprah But u’ll pass on like the rest of get over it.Human.

  18. Yvette on May 11, 2011 at 1:06 am

I wonder how she would have felt if it happened to Tom Cruise, Julia Roberts, or some of those other people she acts way too excited about! Get some business Oprah and get married or adopt a baby.

I was at this taping. Jennifer Hudson never apologized or explained why we waited for almost 3 hours. It was extremely rude. We understand that there was a snowstorm, but the way she handled it was unprofessional. I’m a fan of her music, but not of her as a person because of that.
