We all get that itch when summer arrives to switch up our hair a little bit, whether that means color, cut or simply just some additional new styles. Rihanna has really set the trend with her long Little Mermaid-inspired fishtail braid. A fishtail, also known as a herringbone braid, is named for its tight pattern that resembles a herringbone or fishtail. It’s a chic, easy rendition of the classic braid that’s been seen on celebs everywhere. Check out the video and some tips on how it’s done. –mckenzie harris
1. Pull your hair back into a ponytail. You can part your hair down the middle first or pull it straight back. Secure with an elastic that matches your hair color. You can also switch it up and ditch the elastic, pull your hair to the side, and braid your fishtail this way, like Rihanna.
2. Divide the ponytail into two equal sections. Hold one section in your right hand and one in your left.
3. Switch both sections to one hand. Create a third section by removing a small portion of hair from the outside of section one.
4. Cross the third section over, and combine it with section two. You are again left with two sections.
5. Remove a small section of hair from the outside of section two. Cross it over, and combine it with section one.
6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until your braid has reached the desired length. Secure the end with an elastic. Tip: For a messier effect, pull some hair loose from the braid to give it a relaxed and slightly messy look.
