West coast hip-hop dominated Billboard charts in the late ’80s and early ’90s. But besides from The Game and Snoop, the west coast has moved at a pedestrian pace when it comes to having a huge impact in hip-hop.
Recently signed to Konvict Muzik, Bay Area rapper Ya Boy seeks to bring more attention to west coast hip-hop. He discusses his rise to stardom and what motivates his music. –amir shaw
How did you connect with Konvict Muzik?
I came up hustling in the streets. I jumped into rap because my cousins are Bay Area legends San Quinn and Messy Marv. I started rapping at 16, and I had a song on the radio at 18. It was called “16’s With Me.” It had constant radio play. I moved down to L.A., and I put out 13 mixtapes. I been in XXL, The Source and my Internet buzz was crazy. Akon’s bodyguard told me that Akon was looking for a West Coast rapper. I flew to Miami and met with Akon four years ago. I later had a smash hit in L.A., and Akon later signed me to Konvict Muzik.
Who were you inspired by musically?
I grew up listening to Southern music. The Bay Area is like the South in California. I listened to No Limit and Cash Money. I also listened to 2Pac, E-40, Ruff Ryders and Jay-Z. But I really fell in love with South music.
What motivates you the most?
I’m driven by the losses I took. I lost close to 20 friends in the streets. That motivates me to stay in music and make it for all of the loved ones that are not around to see me make it.
You are on the same label as Lady Gaga and Akon. Is there pressure to live up to what they have accomplished?
There is a lot of pressure, but I’m doing me. I’m blessed to be on the same label as Lady Gaga and being signed to Akon. But I have to continue to do the things that got me to where I am today.
