Tell us about your line BowTied.
BowTied is a direct representation of myself. It’s feminine and romantic with a touch of edginess and sass. Just like the bow on a perfectly wrapped gift, my BowTied pieces are the final touch. I create, package and ship each piece myself from my in-home design space in Houston.
When did you realize you wanted to become a fashion designer?
I realized designing was what I HAD to do when I sold my first piece to a complete stranger who found me through Twitter. I remember exactly how it felt. The most memorable moment was when she sent me a picture of herself wearing the piece, using it as a way to express herself.
How long have you been designing?
I have been designing for three years.
What’s the most challenging part about being a new designer?
Teaching myself new skills. Because I was limited in the technical things I knew, I decided to go back to school and get the formal training that I never had.
Who are some of your fashion inspirations?
I am inspired by designers who stay true to who they are, like Alexander McQueen and Betsey Johnson. I also love Rihanna … I can see her in every piece that I make.
Describe your style in five words.
Romantic, clean, effortless, flowy and simple.
Describe the woman who wears BowTied.
The woman who wears BowTied takes pride in herself and the way she looks. She is confident and alive and doesn’t mind a little extra attention.
What are some of your fashion goals?
My plan is to land an amazing internship, which will hopefully lead to a job working for another designer. Right now, I’m enjoying working with every piece from start to finish. I would love to have my pieces mass-produced for the world.
What has been your biggest accomplishment?
I received a scholarship to the Academy of Art University based on my portfolio, which was an incredible feeling. But everyday feels like an accomplishment for me. I have an 11-month-old baby and still manage to be in school, take care of home and sew.
