When did you guys decide to create an event around sneakers and charity?
Jackson: Through the passion that Thomas, Earl and I have for sneakers, we wanted to have a party and give back. We wanted to bring the sneaker, art and fashion community together for a good cause.
Besides being in attendance, how can party-goers help?
DeCoud: People can bring school supplies to get money off of their admission, and we will have an auction for the True Blue Air Jordans, the Cardinal Air Jordans and several other high-end shoes. We will also have performances, a battle-of-the-brands fashion show with vendors from the area who will show off their clothes.
How will this event benefit the community?
Jackson: We are working with students from Kennedy Middle School. The school is in an area with high poverty and crime. With Fresh Steps, we are giving the kids sneakers, book bags and hair cuts so that we can take the burden off of their parents.
DeCoud: Nike is giving away shoes for everyone in the school. Adidas is also donating time and effort to the school. Reebok is giving away book bags and clothes. We also have a barber shop coming out to give out hair cuts. When you are a kid, you want to go back to school fresh, and we want to help them with that.
What advice do you have for NFL rookies who are looking to give back to the community?
Jackson: Do something that you are passionate about and find ways to help that cause.
DeCoud: Be true to what you’re doing. Make sure your heart is in whatever you do.
The Fresh Steps sneaker event will be held on July 8 at 595 North Event Venue & Lounge in Atlanta. The event starts at 8:30 p.m
