For decades, blacks were lynched, experienced discrimination and were treated inhumanly in Mississippi. Unfortunately, a recent murder proves that little has changed and the Southern state continues to suffer from racial strife.
According to reports, two white teenagers purposely looked for a black man to kill. On June 26, Deryl Dedmon and John Aaron Rice crossed paths with James Anderson who became their victim. While standing outside of a hotel in Jackson, Dedmon ran over Anderson with his Ford pickup truck. After the crime, the city’s district attorney says that Dedmon called his friend and told him, “I just ran that n—– over.” Anderson later died at a hospital in Jackson.
Although many individuals are claiming that we are living in a post-racial society because of the election President Obama, it’s important to realize that racial prejudices still exist in America. The harmful effects of racism is alive within corporate America and the educational and the criminal justice systems. Racism also exists in the minds of citizens who continue to have hateful intentions toward minorities. –amir shaw
