He eventually made the team and is now preparing to participate in his fourth World Championship in Korea next month. Taylor spoke with rolling out about his preparation and what inspires him. –amir shaw
How are you preparing for the 2011 World Championships?
I have to visualize myself winning. I have to go over my race and the key points that it will take to win. I always feel that, if I don’t win, it’s something I didn’t do right.
What inspires you before a race?
I like to watch movies to get me ready for battle. Troy gets me ready to compete. I like Seabiscuit because it’s about a race horse that was the underdog, but he continued to prove them wrong. Although I’m an Olympic champion, some people still see me as an underdog. The critics predicted that I wouldn’t make the team. They said that I would finish fifth.
How has your approach changed since your first year running on a major level?
When I first came in, I dominated the sport. I try to take care of my body better now. I also pick and choose my battles. I don’t race as much now. My main goal was to make the World Championship team. It’s all about maximizing my opportunities.
What can we expect in the future?
I have three track meets in Europe before the World Championships. After that, I have a few track meets until September. I shut down for six weeks and start training for next year. I’m aiming to make the Olympic team next June.
