Hip-hop is more than what you would normally see on BET’s “106 & Park” or MTV Jams. The culture encompasses art, dance, deejaying and lyrics. The Gentleman Jack “Art, Beats + Lyrics” national tour shed light on the essence of hip-hop by emphasizing these components.
Hundreds of attendees stood in line an hour before the doors opened to witness the kick off of the 2011 Gentleman Jack Art, Beats + Lyrics national tour. Held at The Compound in Atlanta on July 29, the event featured hip-hop-inspired art, complimentary Gentleman Jack drinks, and live performances.
Featured artists included hip hop pioneer Enie Paniccioli, Flux, Dax, Mad Clout, Miya Bailey, Greg Mike, Chris Hobe, Maurice Evans, Fabian The Occasional Superstar, and co-producer Dubelyoo.
Tunes were provided by DJ Lord of Public Enemy, DJ Jelly, and DJ Apple Jack King
Live musical acts included alternative hip-hop collective Sore Losers, former R & B singer Scar, and legendary trombone player Fred Wesley. A live band also performed with southern hip-hop duo 8 Ball & MJG. Singer Joi, who was once a member of the group Lucy Pearl, joined the duo to perform their hit “Space Age Pimping.” Jazze Pha also hit the stage to sing the hook on 8 Ball & MJG’s ’90s club banger “Sho Nuff.” –amir shaw
