As newbies to the entertainment industry, Dion and Susan Strowhorn set one goal for their production company, 9x18ProductionS, and that is to provide a quality foundation for newcomers to the industry to gain knowledge on all aspects of the business. This highly creative duo has three movies to their credit. Their latest project, Overcome, is their first feature-length film and will be screened at the 17th annual Black Harvest Film Fest at the Gene Siskel Film Center.
When did you two realize you liked making movies?
Dion: There is a church that we attend in Munster, Ind. It has an outstanding performing arts ministry and we’ve been involved for about five and half years and something just sparked in us. We are kind of empty nesters; we were looking for something to do we both loved.
What’s it like working together on projects?
Susan: For me, I enjoy it, but we have our tiffs and [spats].
Dion: We’ve become closer. And I’ve realized she’s gifted and after working with her I was like, “Wow, I didn’t know you had this gift inside you.” We have to understand if we want to put out the best project and at the end of the night we are still husband and wife.
How do you resolve creative differences?
Dion: I have to go back to the gifts and talents we both have; we don’t over-step.
What advice would you give to aspiring producers?
Dion: Never compromise on your vision. If it is your vision, see it through to the end.
