Babineaux has compiled 254 tackles, 18 sacks and one interception. But Babineaux’s work off the field is also impressive. He has performed charity work for homeless shelters, foster homes and battered women. Babineaux also participated in DTLR’s free football camp for high school students. He discusses his community work and provides insight for rookies in the NFL. –amir shaw

You are involved in a lot of community work. How did you get involved with the DTLR camp for teens?

I got involved with the camp after Sherri Goodall reached out. It’s always a great chance to interact with the kids. The kids are excited about working with NFL players and coaches who have knowledge of higher level football. It always feels good to help them improve their game and show them the right direction on and off the field.

How does the involvement help to build character for the teens?

It’s motivation. I didn’t have this when I was growing up. I know these guys are very excited to have an opportunity that a lot of kids don’t have. The kids who were involved are good listeners and they love to play football.

The start of NFL season is near. What advice do you have for rookies on how to maintain on and off the field?

I think rookies have to be in their play book. The main thing is to know the play book and understand it. That way, you can get on the field and don’t have to think about things. You’ll have the opportunity to hang around the city and enjoy yourself, but the main focus is to learn the playbook and stay focused.
