Rolling out cover girl Naturi Naughton, who stars in NBC’s “The Playboy Club,” (debuts Sept. 19), has also been featured on “Mad Men,” wears 60s fashions on both shows.
It didn’t take long for the 60s to make a comeback in the real world as well, and The Banana Republic has launched a new fashion line based on the “Mad Men” series. The store collaborated with “Mad Men’s” costume designer Janie Bryant and offers stylish 60s outfits and accessories at affordable prices.
Naughton donned a 60s style with a modern twist for her rolling out shoot, and Tamika Martell, Naughton’s stylist, tells us how she did it.
What makes this look a throwback style?
This [top left photo] is a blush [colored] peplum pencil skirt and jacket, this is a structured piece. When you look back on the 60s, like with Diana Ross and other fashion icons, they definitely utilized structures in penciled and feminine cuts. Also, the stiletto heel was really big. We decided to add a modern twist with the platform bootie — those shoes were also in style. The 60s bracelet is from a mobile jewelry boutique, called LLF; I felt it looked vintage, and I loved the rose gold play with the blush [outfit].
What would you do for a contemporary look?
For a contemporary look, I would do something fun, and young. Naturi has a really fresh-faced personality and I would want to reflect that in the look. I would select really funky pieces and things that also had great lines to accentuate her figure. Naturi has an hour-glass figure, but she’s also petite, so I wouldn’t want to get her anything that would swallow her frame.
How did you select colors to complement Naughton’s complexion?
Naturi has a really beautiful brown perfect skin complexion. I wanted to give her more of a shimmery glow with the blush tone [outfit] I felt that would play up her skin tone a lot. I would also choose bold colors. I didn’t want to do anything in black or that was too neutral.
What is your advice for people who love the throwback looks, but they also want to remain contemporary?
Take one or two things that are vintage, but modernize it with something else to keep your look current.
Who is your favorite designer right now?
I love great Catherine Malandrino, she’s got really great structured pieces for women.
