Common Says Erykah Badu Broke Up With Him Over the Phone

To many fans and music industry vets, Erykah Badu’s spellbinding charm with men has become a thing of legend. Though her mythical allure has become part of her ongoing fable, the coquettish singer has recently been stamped as something of a heartbreaker. And according to one of her unlucky former lovers, rapper Common, Badu first broke his heart when she broke up with him over the phone.

According to The Boombox, while visiting the Wendy Williams show on Sept. 13, Common and Williams discussed the “Love of My Life (An Ode to Hip-Hop)” rapper’s relationship with Badu, which lasted from 2000-2002. Common revealed to Williams that Badu was his first love, as well as the sad details about how she called it quits on their famous love affair.

“She handed it to me. I was in my hotel room on tour and … she called me and was like, ‘Hey, I don’t wanna be in this relationship no more. I’m liking somebody else,'” said Common. “That was my first love and my first heartbreak,” he added.

It’s assumed that Badu was speaking of rapper The D.O.C., with whom she had her 7-year-old daughter, Puma,  in 2004. The D.O.C., who was publicly dissed by the singer a few weeks ago, recently confessed his undying love for Badu.

As for Common, despite having his heart crushed by Badu, he assures that he and Badu are now great friends.

“It taught me a lot of things, and when it happened I kinda really got into myself and really learned about myself, and I was able to move on, and now me and E is real cool,” said Common.

Common also touched upon another former flame, Serena Williams, whom he parted ways with earlier this year, saying, “We’re just friends now.” – nicholas robinson
