Raekwon, Ghostface and Mobb Deep Bring The Essence of New York Hip-Hop to the Rock The Bells Concert

Hip-hop enthusiasts got a chance to reminiscence on the essence of New York rap that was prevalent during the ’90s. The Rock the Bells tour stopped in Atlanta on Sept 15. with Mobb Deep and Raekwon, Ghostface Killa in the line up.

Held at the Tabernacle, the show began shortly after 10 p.m. as Mobb Deep hit the stage with DJ/producer Alchemist  on the one’s and two’s. Prodigy and Havoc opened their set with their hit single “Survival of the Fittest” from their debut album The Infamous. They also performed crowd favorites “G.O.D. Pt III,” “Get Away,” and “Quiet Storm.” The Queens, New York natives closed their show with a performance of their debut hit “Shook Ones.”

After a brief intermission, Wu-Tang Clan affiliates Raekwon, Ghostface Killah and Cappadonna performed a slew of hits which included “Ice Cream,” “Daytona 500,” and “Apollo Kids.” But the highlight of the evening was Raekwon rapping several songs from his classic debut album Only Built 4 Cuban Linx.

Hip-hop thrives due to the stardom of new artists and producers. However, the Rock the Bells tour proves that there will always be a large fan base for classic hip-hop from the ’80s and ’90s.–amir shaw
