I have always heard great things about makeup artist Sam Fine through fashion magazines, television shows, and word of mouth, but to meet this guy up-close-and-personal was something else. I had a fabulous time hanging out with him on Sunday, Oct. 16 at Ernest Washington Studios in Atlanta,Ga.
I remember when bringing Fine to Atlanta was just a dream in Marian Anderson’s head back in the summer of 2011. I told her to go for it ,and if she was going to do it — do it big, do it right — and she did the darn thing!
Many fashionistas, aspiring makeup artists, professional makeup artists and just makeup lovers gathered in the studio to meet the “Makeup God.” All the ladies in the audience looked fabulous and were dressed to the nines to meet their idol. Before Marian of Haute Travels brought out Sam, she introduced the founder of Living Water For Girls. Lisa Williams talked about the organization that helps young girls who have been sexually exploited. The beauty event was also a benefit for the girls of Living Water, so they can feel beautiful too after all the trauma they have endured.
Sam Fine then entered the room and the ladies went wild! He was so full of energy, funny, witty, knowledgable and full of makeup tips. He said, “we are family here, so ask me anything”. The ladies fired off questions as he answered them as professionally as he could. He also brought out a model by the name of Connie who he worked on while taking questions.I found out a few things about makeup and techniques from him but one of his pet peeves is that people think he is a dermatologist. That is such a misconception and he says that he gets skin care questions daily, so know that he does “makeup” so consult a dermatologist for skin care needs.
Other things that I learned:
- You should use cream base foundation for the best coverage.
- Its all in the wrist, technique is key.
- Makeup is trial and error.
- Sam starts from the middle of the face, then outward
- Blot your foundation, use a sponge upwards to hairline
- Makeup has bacteria after one month, use wisely and discard when needed.
- Use 2-ply tissues to blot the access oil off your face
- Sam likes to have at least two hours of your time for a perfect look! (gasp)
