Produced by Jay’s longtime collaborator and friend, Pharrell, Jay raps with a slowed paced over a subdued and soulful beat and finally let’s down the walls he erected during Bey’s pregnancy to reveal some of the most sincere, unabashed and heartfelt lyrics of his career.
“Most amazing feeling I feel, words can’t describe the feeling for real./ Baby I paint the sky blue, my greatest creation was you, you. Glory,” raps Jay, clearly in awe over the birth of his child.
Throughout the track, Jay drops some revealing lyrics about his own absentee father, Adnis Reeves, explaining to his daughter that “deep down,” her grandpa was a “good man.”
Sending a nod to his former Def Jam labelmate, Keith Murray, and speaking honestly about himself and Beyoncé, Jay reveals that “the most beautiful-est thing in this world,” as he calls Blue, was conceived in “Paris,” the night before Bey shot the images for her 4 album cover.
But the most striking revelation of all is when Jay references a miscarriage during the track. At the beginning of the song, Jay reveals that he and Beyoncé were worried about having a child: “False alarms and false stops, all made better by the sound of your heart/All the pain of the last time, pray so hard it was the last time.” Later on in the track, Jay reveals that he’s endured the pain of a miscarriage before and worried that Blue wouldn’t make it to term: “last time the miscarriage was so tragic/ we was afraid you’d disappear but nah, baby, you magic.”
Although it’s easy to think that Jay is alluding to Beyoncé experiencing a previous miscarriage, the emcee may just be referring to a miscarriage from his past. On his song “This Can’t Be Life,” from his fifth album, The Dynasty: Roc La Familia, mentions a miscarriage from a previous relationship in 1994. He also wrote about the miscarriage in his 2010 book, Decoded.
But as Jay later raps, Blue is no ordinary child: “You’re my child with the child from Destiny’s Child/ That’s a hell of a recipe.” So thankfully, this time around, Jay has finally become a father. And Jay’s lyrics fade out and we begin to hear baby Blue at the end of the track, it’s obvious that her birth is indeed a glorious thing.
