Terrell Owens is arguably one of the top five wide receivers to ever play in the NFL. But instead of retiring with an NFL team, he could end his career as a member of the Allen Wranglers of the Indoor Football League.
Owens decided to sign a $500,000 deal with the Wranglers after all NFL teams shunned him in 2011. The six-time Pro Bowler tore his ACL last summer and later held a workout with the hopes of being signed by an NFL team once he recovered from injury. But no NFL scouts attended the workout or signed Owens. His financial problems increased and he faced a paternity suit after being late on child support payments several times.
But the fall of Owens should have never occurred. He had the potential to lead teams to a Super Bowl title, but his cantankerous way of handling adversity on the field led to many riffs between him and his teammates. His attitude in the past became a red flag for most NFL general managers.
At 37, he’s become a desperate man seeking to hold on to the one thing that allowed him to prove his greatness. Unfortunately, he will likely spend his last days as a football player in a second rate league that only a few can recognize. –amir shaw
