Oprah Winfrey Opens a School For Girls in South Africa
In 2007, Oprah Winfrey opened the doors to her Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in Johannesburg, South Africa. The school, which serves only girls, was created to provide formal education, life skills and leadership opportunities to academically gifted girls from underprivileged areas in South Africa. Though the school has had a few public scandals involving mistreatment of the students, it has now entered its fifth year of operation.
