Sinead O’Connor Snaps on Hip-Hop: Where’s Jay-Z, 50 Cent on Trayvon’s Murder?

Irish singer Sinead O’Connor has a question: Where are hip-hop’s leading voices on the Trayvon murder? She says old-school hip-hop had a higher purpose and she urges fans and artists to return to that purpose.

Here’s what she wrote in an open letter:

1. Go back to strong black musical guides who left you information in the ’60s and ’70s. When they were living through the civil rights struggle. Curtis Mayfield. The Impressions. Nina Simone, Mahalia Jackson. Sing back the Holy Spirit ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, as those artists did.
