Nicki Minaj has had enough of being compared to Lady Gaga. Since her arrival in the music industry, fans have noted the similarities between the two stars, but in a recent interview on ABC’s “Nightline,” Minaj discussed the comparisons and said she and Gaga are not alike.
While speaking with “Nightline” reporter Juju Chang, Minaj was asked if she was offended by her comparisons to the “Born This Way” singer.
“Offend me? No. Irks me? Yeah,” responded Minaj. “Because we are in completely different lanes.”
Minaj further explained her frustrations: “First of all, I’m a rapper. I’m from South Jamaica, Queens, and I could say some really crazy lyrics right now, but I won’t. What are the similarities?… Wigs? Every female in this game wears wigs. Over-the-top costumes? Ehh. Try again. It’s getting tired now though, to me. In the beginning I was like, OK, it’s cool, hahaha, when they get to know me they’ll understand me.”
Though Minaj and Gaga may be in “two different lanes,” she explains that she has no problem with Gaga. In fact, she adores her — she just isn’t like her.
“Gaga is a fantastic artist. She’s paved her way. She’s opened her own lane. But I feel like I have my own lane. And we never cross, ever!” said Minaj.
Minaj also took time to talk about her rough childhood and although she had no harsh words for Gaga, she hadnothing positive to say about her abusive father and the violence she witnessed as a child.
“My father was abusive. We were afraid for [my mother’s] life because whenever he would have a real bad outburst, he would threaten to kill her,” Minaj explained. “I wanted to kill him. I wished he was dead.” Though, she admits that she has forgiven him.
