Effective networking can make the difference between elevating your brand and annihilating it. Here, then, are five characters to avoid when networking, more importantly, make sure you’re not one of them.
The VIP
Stiff, stale and status thirsty, this professional avoids human contact other than to collect business cards. She’s not there to network; she’s there to be seen. She doesn’t need to introduce herself; you should already know who she is. The VIP looks down her nose at others and is more interested in what a fellow networker is wearing rather than what they’re offering. The VIP sabotages her success at every turn. “You aren’t so important that you can’t meet with people,” says executive coach John Heckers of CEOJobExpert.com. “Nor are you so important that you cannot be courteous and giving.”
