Elvis Presley wasn’t exactly banned from playing outside the U.S. by any authorities, but he was prevented by his manager “Colonel” Tom Parker from playing anywhere abroad. Many believe this was because Parker was secretly Dutch-born and did not have legal U.S. citizenship. Reportedly, Parker feared being exposed if he applied for a passport to go abroad with Elvis.
Despite the fact that Elvis sold around 40 percent of his records outside the U.S., The King only ever played outside the States once during a 1957 three-day tour to Canada, where U.S. citizens (then) did not need a passport for entry.
