VH1 cancelled Chad Johnson’s upcoming show, but his life continues to be shown on reality TV. HBO’s docu-series, “Hard Knocks,” follows the Miami Dolphins during training camp and Johnson’s tribulations were a major focus of the show that aired on Aug. 14.
During the episode, Johnson seems to lose focus during practice and dropped one pass during the team’s preseason game last week. HBO cameras were also around after Johnson was arrested for a domestic dispute with his new wife, Evelyn Johnson.
The most awkward moment of the show occurred when Miami Dolphins coach Joe Philbin called Johnson into his office to release him from the team. Johnson pleaded with Philbin for another chance by saying, “Coach, I’ve never been in trouble before — ever.”
Phillbin responded by saying, “I wish it was different, I wish I could tell you something more encouraging, but I just think it’s best for both of us to part ways at this point in time.
Johnson left the room dejected in what has likely been the worst 72 hours of his career.
But Philbin’s decision to cut Johnson while the cameras were rolling was a cruel way to dismiss a veteran who was once a Pro Bowl-caliber player. It proves that Philbin lacks the experience and wherewithal to be a great coach in the NFL. It was a brash move that could cause other Dolphins players to distrust Philbin as the season goes on.
