Early this morning, in LaPlace, La., 25 miles west of New Orleans, a man opened fire on a sheriff’s deputy on traffic duty for no apparent reason.
The deputy, Michael Scott Boyington, 33, of Kenner, La., was working near the Valero Energy plant, and struck multiple times. Despite his wounds, Boyington called dispatchers and described the suspect. He is expected to survive.
After the shooting, police followed a car seen speeding away from the incident and chased the suspects to a nearby trailer park. According to police, the officers interviewed men inside the trailer home, and noticed a fully clothed man underneath a blanket, when the officers asked the man to come outside, they were ambushed by yet another person. Two officers were killed.
“Another person exited that trailer with an assault weapon and ambushed … excuse me … ambushed our two officers,” St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff Mike Tregre told reporters.
Slain and Injured Officers
The slain sheriff’s deputies were identified as Brandon Nielsen, 34, of Destrehan, La.; and Jeremy Triche, 27, of LaPlace, La.
A fourth officer, Deputy Jason Triche, 30, of Montz, La., was also shot and injured during this incident.
The Louisiana state police are now investigating.
