There’s nothing like a good meal to bring people together to fellowship and celebrate. On Aug. 1, Target served as the title sponsor for Sylvia’s Golden Jubilee, which attracted more than 300 Harlemites and celebrity friends who were treated to a free southern-style soul food breakfast buffet, live entertainment, children’s activities, arts and crafts and a tribute mini-parade presented by celebrity baker, Cake-Man Raven.
The festivities won’t end there. On Sept. 18, Sylvia’s Golden Jubilee Gala will salute Sylvia’s as “the world’s kitchen” with an under-the-tent invitational fundraiser for 600-plus guests. The night will commence with a lavish cocktail hour, a program, and live performances by Roberta Flack, Doug E. Fresh, Ron Grant & Friends, and others who have made Sylvia’s a home away from home for the past five decades. Dinner, dancing, official proclamations and a grand announcement will round off this spectacular night.
The late “Queen of Soul Food,” Sylvia Woods, who passed away this summer, founded Sylvia’s Restaurant in 1962. Its seating capacity was 35, 50 years later this world-renowned icon proudly seats 450. Honorary chairs include Roberta Flack, Chad Ochocinco, Chris Rock, and Rev. Al Sharpton and actor Michael K. William’s (HBO’s “Board Walk Empire” and “The Wire”) was the master of ceremonies. –yvette caslin
