L. McGregor has been writing for as long as she can remember. McGregor’s latest creative venture is a series of children’s books centered on a little brown rabbit named Little Pampu.
Pampu is Swahili for pump, if you were wondering. McGregor’s first little reader is called “Little Pampu Rides an Airplane.” Hello Kitty, move over — Little Pampu is coming! –tony binns
What inspired you to write a children’s book?
Well, I started out writing a novel, but I’ve always wanted to write a children’s book and that is why I wanted to do a creative character for children that they would love and be inspired by.
Can you tell us more about Little Pampu, the main character?
Little Pampu is a very polite, adventurous rabbit and she belongs to the family of Chocolate Bunnies and what she does is have adventures in her sleep and while she is in her dreams there is always an adult character who accompanies her or protects her. It goes with the theme of “it takes an entire village to raise a child.”
And eventually when she wakes up she tells everyone about her dream and there is a Chocolate Bunny who also helps her achieve her dream. Little Pampu and the Chocolate Bunnies prove to children that their dreams can come true.
How easy was it coming up with this characterization?
It was pretty easy because she is actually me and all the adventures that I want to do I’ll probably relive through her because there are a lot of things I didn’t do as child.
What significance is it to have a brown rabbit as a main character?
Well, specifically, Little Pampu, because members of her family are different colors and shades, as people come in different colors and shades. I wanted her to be brown because there are not enough images of brown cartoon characters — brown characters — and that is why I wanted her to be brown and to stand out.
