In 1979, at age 22, shortly after his father’s passing from kidney failure, Jakes decided to go into ministry and founded Greater Emmanuel Temple of Faith in Montgomery, W. Va., about an hour’s drive from his hometown. In order to support the church and pay the bills with just 10 members, Jakes held onto his day gig digging ditches.
